We believe that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, all-sufficient Word of God through which comes forth unto salvation followed by the sanctification of those who place their trust in Christ alone as Savior and Lord.  Benefiting from God's eternal truth necessitates humility, gratitude and desire to become more like Christ.  In His Word, God has "given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness."

God's Remedy for Depression

There are times when dealing with life's struggles can be like taking a distasteful medicine, or even like getting an operation.  We dread the experience, but we want the benefit.  For the Christian, the truth of God's Word cuts to the very cause of those heartaches and discouragements that can digress into the sin of depression; it gives hope and peace in the midst trial.  Asaph wrote, "My flesh and my heart fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."  Although he was under physical and emotional strain, God was the Source of his strength and hope.

Depression is severe discouragement that interferes with our service for the Lord.  It can be described by the word hopelessness; it is characterized by a "sustained chronic mood of  sadness, despondency, and discouragement resulting in difficulty concentrating, slowing of thought, memory impairment, irritability, and an excessive response to small annoyances.  There may be preoccupation with accompanying physical problems such as back pain, muscle pain, fatigue, weight loss or gain, loss of appetite and sexual interest, and sleep problems, which usually means waking early and not being able to go back to sleep." (Dr. Walter G. Fremont)  When dealing with depression, make certain that physical problems have been ruled out by a medical doctor (thyroid, hormones, etc).

People wrongly label depression as an emotional problem.  The emotions of a person who is feeling depressed are "working fine!"  Depression is similar to "a bank alarm or a warning light on your dashboard or the pain from a bad tooth;" it is the result of a deeper problem that will not go away by treating the symptom.  Cutting off the alarm, disconnecting the fuse on the dashboard or giving an aspirin can actually cause greater harm because the cause has not been properly addressed. (Dr. Greg Mazak)

"Depression is typically a symptom of a spiritual problem."  Spiritual problems do not always have to deal with committing something that God forbids.  They can also involve failing to follow God's principles for success.  II Peter 1:1-7 gives the key for Christians to experience wholeness and contentment.   "Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,  as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,  by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."  Peter goes on to list several areas that we are to add to our faith.  Failure to do so will bring a corresponding harvest.
